Our vision, the public benefit and opportunities for support

The Elizabeth Landmark is planned as a major contemporary landmark and cultural destination in Northumberland, commemorating Queen Elizabeth II and celebrating her enduring relationship with the Commonwealth. Conceived as a 55-metre sculpture on Cold Law, the project is intended to create a new public place in the landscape and a lasting point of cultural significance for the region.
Designed by Simon Hitchens, the landmark draws on the history and character of its setting. Its form references the silhouette of a steam turbine blade, reflecting the engineering heritage of the area, while the wider site will include paths of local stone, standing stones, a hill-top seating area and interpretation connected to Queen Elizabeth II and the Commonwealth. The walking trail and car park are intended to be open to the public all day, every day.
Work has already begun on site, and the project has attracted more than £650,000 in support towards development costs. That backing has enabled full planning permission to be secured, and initial site works to begin, marking an important stage in bringing the project forward.
Alongside its cultural and commemorative role, we have set out a clear environmental and social ambition. Plans for the project include the use of recycled steel, green concrete and circular materials, alongside a biodiversity net positive approach, local material recycling, and a focus on jobs, youth engagement and educational opportunities.
The project is being supported by a broad professional team spanning engineering, planning, landscape, ecology and construction, and there are opportunities for businesses, donors and partners to contribute to its delivery through direct support and in-kind giving. Areas identified include engineering, detailed design, fabrication, plant and lifting equipment, stone, steel and other structural components.
