THE ELIZABETH LANDMARK

A letter from Viscount Devonport

Viscount Devonport shares his reflections on the vision behind The Elizabeth Landmark and its celebration of Queen Elizabeth II and the Commonwealth.

We have gifted just shy of 25 acres around Cold Law Hill to The Elizabeth Landmark charitable trust to help bring this world-class project to fruition.

We have been inspired to do so in part by the Waterloo Monument, an awe-inspiring Doric column which stands on the summit of Peniel Heugh, Jedburgh, among acres of natural landscape, and because we believe a lasting monument to our longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is both fitting and essential.

The Elizabeth Landmark will be a powerful symbol of gratitude to Queen Elizabeth II and her uniting of the Commonwealth over 70 years, coming together at Cold Law, Northumberland.

Cold Law is a beautiful and wild part of Northumberland, close to the engineering heartland of the county, just a few miles from where Lord Armstrong established his primary ironworks in the mid-1800s, a fact reflected in the design and materials of the landmark.

In a world that can often feel increasingly fractured, the Commonwealth’s shared values of tolerance, respect and understanding are more important than ever.

We hope that this celebration of the Commonwealth as a compelling force for good will represent our shared heritage and a shared tomorrow.

Fittingly, all capitals of the Commonwealth’s 56 member states are situated south of The Elizabeth Landmark.

As long-time supporters of the arts, we value the challenge that good art presents, and the way it inspires and helps to broaden our horizons.

The Elizabeth Landmark is eye-catching, thought-provoking and awe-inspiring. It speaks of things larger than ourselves through its unique and site-specific design. In an ever-shrinking world, we need experiences that expand our perspectives.
